A woman seriously weakened by fibromyalgia wants to start practicing yoga (a very good idea, by the way) and wonders what DVDs would be a good place to start, given her challenging physical limitations... Question:

I have fibromyalgia, and I need to start yoga. However, with fibro, you need to start out very slowly and easily since everything hurts and the fatigue is intense.

Which yoga DVD would you recommend to be best? (I am also overweight and have been sedentary for quite some time.)

Thank you for your time.
Mary

Answer:

Mary, for your situation, I like Carol Dickman’s DVD’s best, for a nice, gentle easing into the practice of yoga. She has a gentle, effective program called Seated Yoga and, if that’s too challenging for you, she’s created Bedtop Yoga which she leads, in a bed, dressed in her jammies (which I find an enchanting touch, to be wearing attire that bonds her with her students). I also recommend these two videos to others with challenging physical limitations, whether temporary or permanent, such as MS, congestive heart failure, fatigue from chemotherapy, stroke, and so on.

Another fine choice is Susan Winter Ward’s Sitting Fit Any Time, but it’s a little more demanding - it’s designed for healthy people sitting at work as well as for people limited by illness.

Other yoga videos that we carry - Cyndi Lee’s Om Yoga in a Box; Sadhana Yoga, and even Yoga to Beat the Blues, are probably a little too demanding for you to start with - but you may want to graduate to them, as your energy and strength return.

And, for what it’s worth, I applaud your decision to start practicing yoga, in spite of your weakened state. I think it will be a real help, and you’ll realize benefits pretty early on. So stick with it, even if at first it feels too hard!

I suffer with fibromyalgia. I used to do Yoga at an advanced stage. Now, I have to start over. I found a wonderful set of dvd's called THE GROVE APPROACH--FIBROGA 1 and 2. You might want to give them a try. They are very gentle yoga exercises for beginning on the path.

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatique had taken over my life, as I knew it. Belleruth's amazing guided imagery cd Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatique has given me the courage and belief that I can heal. I no longer lie in bed day and night waiting for the depression to lift, the pain to become tolerable or my old life to magically reappear.
I am healing. I am living a NEW, and improved, life.I thank Belleruth with all that I am and all that I shall be.I found my strength and courage again. It is still a bumpy ride but I no longer dread the bumps, I embrace them.My heart is singing once again, if even for a moment. For that one moment is worth celebrating!
