A post-doc child psychologist asks for recommended resources for 2 siblings she works, ages 8 and 9, who were exposed prenatally to drugs and who suffer from insomnia, depression and anxiety..
I am a post doc psychologist and work with children who were exposed pre-natally to chemical substances. Two siblings I am working with, an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old, are suffering from insomnia (multiple bereavements and an adoptive parent who is currently fighting cancer).
The 8 year old has symptoms of anxiety and the 9 year old depression. Do you have any cassettes or CDs for insomnia in children??? The one I have for myself (since I know insomnia firsthand) is not really geared for children. Thank you!!!
S.D.
Dear S.D.,
Depending on the emotional/intellectual age of these kids, they might be right for Roxanne Daleo’s sleep imagery for younger kids, called Good Night, Sleep Well - I''d say that audio is for pre-school to early grade school kids, maybe ages 2-8.
Also, Charlotte Reznick has an audio program with very nice, age-appropriate self-regulation & imagery tools for kids that suit a slightly older age range - maybe 5-10 years - called Discovering Your Special Place. Although it''s not specifically for sleep - more for general relaxation - it would help with sleep and also could make a dent on anxiety and depression.
Ellen Curran''s book, Guided Imagery for Healing Children & Teens has some good imagery in it for you to use with them to help with sleep, anxiety and depression.
And there is a terrific little book and toolkit called Be the Boss of Your Sleep, by Timothy Culbert and Rebecca Kajander of Children''s Hospital of Minneapolis, that I just love - in fact, we''ll be carrying it in our next catalog - but you can find it now at http://www.childrensmn.org. The language, graphics and content are perfect for kids, teaching them belly breathing, guided imagery, progressive muscle relaxation, positive self-talk, acupressure, aromatherapy and self-massage.
Hope this helps.
