A Son’s Unwilling Participation in Weight Loss Imagery Yields Impressive Results! | Print |  E-mail

We got this from Dinah, back in the days when we sold guided imagery on tape:

I am a large, Goddess-like woman, about 5’9” and maybe 285 pounds. I love to eat and so do my adult boys, who are also of generous proportions.  Let me be clear: I like the way I look, and so does my boyfriend.  But I started listening to guided imagery for Weight Loss for my health. I wanted to lose around 50 pounds for my blood pressure and my knees.

I kept one tape in my car so I could listen as I drove around (even though I know you are not supposed to) and one at home by my bed, to listen to before falling asleep. It was definitely having an effect on me, because I wasn’t as hungry. I was mellow. The fried foods that I normally adore were starting to feel greasy and unpleasant on my tongue.  Even though I was not getting on the scale (I think that is a bad idea), I could tell from my clothes that I was losing weight.  I had more energy too.  But that is not what this tale is about.

One night my older son and I were going out to dinner together, and, driving to the restaurant, I put the tape on, as is my wont. He got annoyed and shut the tape off and turned on the radio tuning it to his preferred music station.

I usually indulge him, but I just was not in the mood, so I said, very firmly, “PUT THE TAPE BACK IN; IT COMFORTS ME AND I WANT TO HEAR IT!!”. He was so shocked, he did what he was told and the imagery played the whole way to the restaurant.

When we got there, we ordered our usual bountiful dinners. We ate and talked and ate, and I felt full before I was done – something that had been happening since listening to the imagery.  I actually pushed my plate away before I was done eating everything.  However, what was really amazing was that my son did the same thing. And I am here to tell you, as far as I know, he has NEVER pushed away a plate with food still on it, not in his whole life!!

He was affected by that imagery, the same way I was, only he didn’t know it. And believe me, I just smiled to myself and said nothing. It is amazing how something so pleasant can be so dietetic, even to the unwilling!!!!

LOL,

Dinah

It seems it was actually the power of the relationship and not the guided imagery tape that did the trick for the woman's son. I do find guided imagery helpful, but in this case, it is being overlooked at how the relationship is what may have caused this child to follow in his mother's footsteps.

I love the weight loss tape. I listened to it each day for weeks starting in the Fall of 07 in the hopes of shedding 25 pounds that I gained over the past 5 years while coping with physical disability. The results were interesting. There was an increase in my already established exercise habits. From September of 07 to March of 08 I exercised 6 days a week, both supervised weight training and cardio. Concurrently I conducted a massive clearing out of unwanted clothing, books, housewares and other unnecessary items from my home and office. I created and organized files, drawers, closets and even my sewing chest. Additionally, I have successfully completed numerous projects associated with "turning the page" financially, socially and establishing a new phase to my career. I let go of the old to make room for the new. Weight loss? None. Although it is obvious that I have strengthened and built lean tissue, and while that is good, it doesn't relieve my joints of the excess weight. The irony is that I am actually heavier on my feet, knees and hips with plenty of fat still to loose. No, I don't eat lots of fried food, white floor, soft drinks of any sort or much sugar. Yep, I am into my veggies and lean protein. I plan to give the tape another round of play and see if I can't get those dashing enzymes to escort some fat to do what it was meant to do and provide some more energy to get another project off the ground. Hopefully this time I'll loose some weight, too!

Brian,
We never give guided imagery sole attribution for a success story, understanding that many factors are usually involved, many of which have nothing to do with the imagery. But I'm not so sure I agree that a teenage son, in fairly active, age-appropriate rebellion against his Mom, would be unduly influenced by his desire to model his behavior after hers. Although on an unconscious level, you could be right. Either way, I agree that we're pretty complex beings, and have many layers of reasons for doing what we do... best to not be too reductionistic. Thanks for writing.

Esther,
How fascinating that the imagery is working for you on all the metaphoric and psychological levels, but not on your weight, per se! C'mon, dashing enzymes!! Get crackin'!!
Seriously, you may want to alternate the dashing enzymes imagery with some by either David Illig, Martha Howard or Emmett Miller, just to come at it from a different direction.
I know that I used to be able to lose weight from just listening to my imagery up 'til I hit my late 50's and then my metabolism wasn't quite so easy to push around any more!
Good luck!

I've been doing Yoga since I was fourteen and I'm now 55. I have the fitness level of an average 35 year old. I can do an hour aerobics with 3-5 two minute breaks and yoga has plays a big part of my life. It engages many muscle groups and while strengthing one set of muscles, it lengthens and stretches the others. I'm pleasantly plumb, not overweight and I've maintained my healthy weight over the years.
