Co-workers Contribute Sick Days to Man with Cancer | Print |  E-mail

My inspiring story doesn’t have to do with mind-body CDs, although I’m a satisfied user of guided imagery, yoga and meditation.  This is about the people I work with.

I’m a 42 year old husband and father, recently diagnosed with stomach cancer. I have worked for the same small business for the past 12 years.  Currently I am facing several rounds of chemotherapy, with little sick leave left, because earlier this year, my wife had to undergo back surgery. I was needed to help at home.  It never crossed my mind that I might need those sick days for myself.  I never got sick.

My co-workers got together with our manager and figured out a way to donate their own sick days to me, so I won’t lose salary when I am too sick to work.  I now have 34 extra days, if I need them.  Each person gave whatever they could spare. The relief my wife and I felt was indescribable.

Every time I think about their generosity and love, my eyes fill with tears.  This kindness may be what cures me, more than any chemotherapy treatment.  I post this story with you, because it reminds us all of the good we are capable of.

Gratefully,
Tom P.

Dear Tom,
When I was out sick for treatment for inflammatory breast cancer, many people donated thier time off to keep me receiving a paycheck from my employer, which kept my children and me in health insurance. It was a huge heart opening experience, and I agree with you that such love is in itself as healing as medicine! Sending prayers to you,
Elizabeth (cancer free!)

I have had the opportunity to give sick leave hours to four coworkers who were themselves ill or who were needed to care for a life partner who was ill or dying. Each of them expressed their gratitude and promised the return of time if I was ever in need. What they may not have realized is that I have already received the joy of being in a position to help, which is its own gift. Tom is obviously very appreciated for the contributions he has made to his colleagues and their common effort over the years. May the gift of time help him heal.

I too am in the process of chemo for metastatic breast cancer. My employer has done the same for me. Isn't it great to have so many care so much. I am glad to see the amount of people that are receiving such a precious gift, especially when health insurance is involved.

God Bless
Ruth
