Sending this forward...thanks so much! Nothing can stop the momentum of your work and guided imagery as those of us who are benefitting continue to speak up, stand up, and share the truth in living color.
This discussion calls to mind Peter Drucker from his book "Innovation and Entrepreneurship"..."most innovations in public-service institutions are imposed on them either by outsiders or by catastrophe...the forces that impede entrepreneurship and innnovation in these institutions are inherent in them, integral to them, inseparable from them." - Barbara B

Gerhild,
Thanks for writing.
I assume that was a V.A. workshop, yes?
We really have made great strides - as have many other innovative, effective programs and practices- and some of the best work is being done in the V.A.'s. by practitioners who do what they think is best for their vets, regardless. But it hasn't affected the top down official line yet, which is stuck on those very two techniques - PET and CPT. Once a system invests time and money on investigating and promoting certain methods, a whole industry builds up around them, to ensure their continued existence within the system.
Remember the great sociologist, Max Weber? I can't remember the exact quote any more, but it goes something like this: buraucracies exist first and foremost maintain themselves.
Thank heavens for the front line staff who continue to do what they think is best for their vets. - Belleruth

Dear Belleruth,
I just sat yesterday in an all-day long workshop (Advanced Therapeutic Techniques for Treating our Military Personnel & their Families), and they only pushed PE (Prolonged Exposure therapy) and CPT (Cognitive Processing therapy). Not once did they even mention guided imagery. Usually I speak up, but there was no time to speak up.

I was under the impression that you had made great strides within the military with your PTSD Cds. Whatever happened?

I integrate in my practice most of your guided imagery CDs, and I am quite sucessfull. My patients love your voice, and so do I.

Thanks for continuing your good work!

Belleruth-

I couldn't agree more, and it brings into question who is advising these decision makers. I am wondering, as Susie Citizen, what might be an effective way to make some noise about this. I suppose we could all write our reps and our professional orgs., but I discourage myself at the prospect of slow red tape and lip service when this situation is compounding daily -- and now with more troops slated for deployment... Anyway, thanks for your clear thoughts and info. Indeed, let's hope. - Eleanor Howard LICSW

Wonderful article! Thanks

ANC can you believe MORE from my Alma Mater at the University of Pennsylvania! Positive Psychology AND Double Exposure Therapy!
As you say they each have their place ... just NOT with the whole body embedded responses of PTSD! - Jane Twitmyer
