My 2 1/2 year old son had surgery to correct a botched circumcision just before his 2nd birthday and the birth of his younger brother. He has had night wakings ever since. He seems to truly be in fear when this happens. It is extremelly unsettling for us as parents and for him too. Sometimes I can tell he is still asleep. Sometimes it takes much longer to calm him down. Sometimes he is fully awakened and calms after a drink in the kitchen before going back to bed in his room. We often end up sleeping with him in his bed or ours.
Please help. What can we do for a child so young? - Heather

Belleruth,
Can you tell me if there are research studies that point to effectiveness of guided imagery in the preschool population? I suspect it would be effective in pain reduction, anxiety, and many of the other problems that have been studied in children and adults...but the studies I have seen reported all point to children 6 and up? I write an Early Childhood column and I'd like to point my readers (preschool and child care teachers and administrators) in the direction of guided imagery for preschoolers. I was hoping for some data to report along with it. I'll still put them on to it, but data would make it easier for them to request funding for such items. I can't even IMAGINE that the preschool set wouldn't experience very positive results! - Donna
