I'm a 55 year old male who, at the age of 50, finally decided to get serious about my physical fitness and lost almost 50 over 12 months through an improved diet and increased exercise/activity level.

Since that initial weight loss, I've maintained my weight with some free-weight exercises just once a week, walking 1-2 times per week, and doing a vigorous 2 hour cycling run once a week during the warmer months and spending 2 hours a week on a cycling trainor indoors when it gets too cold.

About 6 months ago a friend introduced me to bikram yoga, aka "hot yoga," and I've grown to LOVE it! It's replaced my free-weights workout - I've seen and increase in both muscle tone and size and will probably replace most of my indoor training on the bike. I finally lost the 8 pounds I'd put on over the previous winter and have seen the usual improvements in posture and back muscle soreness. In addition, people have commented on a "healthy glow" my face now has, probably due to all the sweating and increased blood flow that bikram yoga generates.

I can't say enough good things about it....I'm hooked for life!

For starters, a live teacher (as opposed to a video) would be ideal. Word of mouth in your community for a good referral would be optimal. Or you could check at your local Y, community center or health/fitness spa for a recommendation. That way you won't inadvertently do something that's not so great for your aching knees, back or neck.
Any of the yoga products on this site that are described as good for beginners would be my second choice for you.
Everything Joyce says is true - yoga is a wonderful thing! - Belleruth

Count me in! I have been doing yoga for about two months and really love it. It is helping with all the regular stuff, like flexibility and strength but also really helping with body image and contentment. Sometimes its hard to keep from going door to door telling everyone to try it! I was happy to read your comment. Joyce - Joyce
