This Year’s Traumatic Stress Conference Was in Chicago, a City Popping with Pride | Print |  E-mail
Monday, 17 November 2008

I’m here at the annual ISTSS conference (International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies) to scan the field for new findings and techniques in treating traumatic stress.  This field is exploding so rapidly, it’s hard to stay current – which is a wonderful thing.  So I’m going to be soaking up new info like a sponge.

And more importantly, the clever and bodacious Dr. Jennifer Strauss, principal investigator from Duke and the Durham V.A., will at last be presenting some of her findings from the guided imagery for trauma study (GIFT is the acronym) with women suffering from military sexual trauma from the Vietnam War.  Very exciting!

This year it’s in Chicago, and this city is so proud of itself for launching Barack Obama’s political career, it’s simply beside itself.  It’s fun to see the local news going crazy, and the cameras trained on my old neighborhood of Hyde Park, where I lived for a decade myself.  I love Chicago – such a vital, gritty, alive, juicy city!  Everything Carl Sandburg said was true!!

Besides, I kind of grew up here, between the ages of 17-27.  The generous, intimidating, academic juggernaut of the University of Chicago gave me a full scholarship plus living expenses so I could go to The College, and a full fellowship plus living expenses for grad school; I met my dynamo husband in Chicago; my wonderful daughter-in-law and son-in-law are from Chicago.  So, why wouldn’t I be  wildly appreciative of this town?

But I digress.  What I started to say is that I’m thrilled to see this country redeem a big chunk of its ugly past with the selection of this gifted man as our next president.  I think we have great things in store in terms of further healing and growth and change on many levels and many arenas.  It’s a shame things had to fall apart so spectacularly to get to this point, but I’m here to say that I’m trusting in the future of this country again (I’m just not looking at my 401K!!).

I just got back from a brief trip to Turkey, where shop owners and random people on the street would see my American self and with a  big smile, immediately put up a thumbs up signal and yell, “OBAAAAAMA!!!!”.  It was wonderful.

Maybe I’ll see you this weekend in Salt Lake City at our Panic/PTSD workshop!

Meantime, take care and be well.

Belleruth, I loved your rapture about Chicago, your love of your own life and the city's vitality. I was born there, though never lived there, but have great memories of visits.
I am just back from Sicily and had the same "thumbs up" experience with "OBAMA."
Thanks for your excitement about healing and learning.

I share your love of Chicago. I completed my master's there and am currently working on my doctor of ministry degree at one of the (9) seminaries there in HYDE PARK. It is such a vibrant and intellectual and diverse place.

Soak up that trauma information - we need it. While living in Chicago a few years ago I worked with a therapist who first taught me that one can heal from trauma. Another reason Chicago is a great place in my mind.

Go BARAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm happy to see people so proud of electing a president!

As for trauma, I want to see more information about how or if massage therapy can support the healing process. Any conference papers on this?

Lots of love...

No papers yet. But there are a couple of studies that I know of that are currently in the pipeline, so stay tuned. The Samueli Institute has been very supportive of researching this with our returning soldiers.

So uplifted to hear about the conference you are attending!Women suffering from sexual trauma from Viet Nam...wow!, at last! We were in our 20's then...all of life ahead..some of us wives, some of us enlisted, some of us commissioned...all of us linked. Know that you will share this healing information as you have been doing for so many years. Thanks once again!

I'm a Chicagoan by birth and have lived here all my 57 years and love the city and its citizens! And I also share your enthusiasm for Obama. It's been a horrible eight years but I feel renewed with all the news and staff appointments that are coming from Obama's transition team.

I have a question for you about listening to tapes as I go to sleep. I have two tapes by Martha Howard that I listen to when I go to bed at night. Are the tapes effective if I fall asleep listening to them or should I try to stay awake?

Dear fellow Chicago fan,
It's fine to fall asleep. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest that when you're sleeping, your brain waves are even slower and more receptive to the imagery than in a relaxed, waking state. But either way, the imagery does go in, asleep or awake. So feel free to snooze.

p.s. Just for the record, I ate at Manny's Deli when I was in town last week, sharing a love for corned beef & matzo balls with our prez-elect.
